Virgin Voyages Tests Drink Packages - "Drink Like a VIP"

Virgin Voyages is known for being 18+, but among those that have sailed, many also know them for extraordinary quality cocktails, and higher-quality spirits than are often found on cruise ships.  Unlike many lines that offer add-ons to your cruise which allow for unlimited (or practically unlimited) drinks during your voyage, each drink on Virgin is paid for a la carte - until now.

How to Get Unlimited Drinks on Virgin Voyages

Since launching, Virgin has offered one way for sailors to enjoy the bars without paying for each drink individually, but not as an add-on/package.  Guests booked in Virgin's highest-end accommodations, know as Mega Rockstar Suites already enjoy in-room bar setups, and unlimited drinks up to $25 each at any ship bar, and at The Beach Club at Bimini.  Being a Mega Rockstar (the guests booked into those suites) isn't cheap though - and includes much more than just drinks.  So what about everyone else?

Bar Tab

A unique concept, Virgin's Bar Tab offering allows sailors (guests) to pre-pay a set amount of money for drinks in exchange for some bonus cash (err, Bar Tab).  While doing so means you use it or lose it, pre-paying can mean hundreds of dollars in free drinks.  How much of a bonus you get depends on how much you pre-pay, as seen below, though some sailors (such as Sea Blazers, who sailed early on, get even more).

  • $250 when purchasing a $1000 Bar Tab
  • $175 when purchasing a $750 Bar Tab
  • $100 when purchasing a $500 Bar Tab
  • $50 when purchasing a $300 Bar Tab
  • $25 when purchasing a $200 Bar Tab

To add Bar Tab, you can either call Virgin, ask your First Mate (Traven Advisor), or log into the Virgin site or mobile app and do it right from there.  Some folks don't want to have to plan this way, however - and just want to pay a flat fee.  Now, Virgin seems to be playing with an option for these sailors.

Drink Like a VIP

Showing up recently on Virgin's site is reference to what appears to be pretty close to a traditional cruise line drink package.  Virgin is calling it "Drink Like a VIP", and purchasing this for your cruise allows you endless drinks, valued up to $20 each, on the ship and at The Beach Club at Bimini.  While there's no big 'catch', per se, as of now, only a limited set of sailors can take advantage of this.  Here are the key facts.

  • Sailors must be staying in Rockstars accommodations (not Mega Rockstars, which already have drinks included, as noted up top).
  • The package is only available on Valiant Lady sailings in March of 2025 - no other ships or sailings, as of now.
  • The cost is $95 per sailor, per day of the itinerary - you can't purchase it for only part of a voyage.
  • All sailors in the room must purchase the package if one sailor wants it.  Like other lines, this is all or nothing.
  • Drink Like a VIP cannot be purchased onboard - it must be added to the voyage no less than 48 hours before sailing.
  • Promotional Bar Tab can be used toward the purchase price, except for Bar Tab added as part of Deep Blue Extras or other Sailing Club offers.

You can find the full terms and conditions of the offer on Virgin's site, here, and you can read about drink packages in general, here.

Billy's Take

Clearly this is a test, given the very limited sailings this applies to - and that it only applies to Rockstars, though it'd be interesting to see if that part 'sticks' should the offer be extended.  In general, I like having options, and like most, I was surprised when Virgin launched that they didn't have a drink package, especially since the basic construct did exist with their Mega Rockstar program.

On the flip side, I do worry a little bit about whether this might impact the quality of the onboard offerings.  Virgin's spirits, mixers, and even garnishes tend to exceed what we've found, even on higher-end lines, and it'd be a shame to see any of that change, should lower-margin demand increase.  The one thing we know for sure is that if we didn't already have a full-schedule for March, we'd be hopping on to try this ourselves.  If you have a chance to try it, let us know!
